In soil, dimethyl ether - boron trifluoride reacts readily with the moisture to form dimethyl ether and boron trifluoride dihydrate. Dimethyl ether and boron trifluoride dihydrate are not readily biodegradable, but they have a low potential for adsorption. Dimethyl ether has a logKow of 0.13 - 0.26 (JETOC, 1991). Boron trifluoride dihydrate, as well as its further hydrolysis products (e.g. boric acid, fluoroborates), are inorganic and have no cationic properties. Binding to sewage sludge is therefore unlikely, and as a consequence a transfer to the soil compartment is not expected. No tests on terrestrial organisms are therefore provided.
