Low concentrations of the test material have been found in water and air samples taken in a variety of locations and volatilization from water surfaces is expected to be an important fate process. However, complete release to the air, water or soil compartments is not expected to result in distribution to other compartments (published data).

Various strains of bacteria and yeast have been shown to use methacrylonitrile as the sole source of nitrogen and/or carbon and the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia is capable of tolerating and growing in media containing potassium cyanide. In contrast, acrylamidase of Brevibacterium sp. R312 is inhibited by methacrylonitrile via a mechanism thought to involve reaction with the –SH group of the enzyme (published data).
