Description of key information

The test item cesium nitrate has to be classified as oxidizing according to the UN "Manual of Tests and Criteria", ST/SG/AC.10/11/Rev.5, 2009, 34.4.1, test method O.1.
It has been assigned to the Division 5.1 "Oxidizing Substances", Packing Group PG I.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
yes

Additional information

Key-study:

Tests on oxidizing properties of the sample cesium nitrate were performed according to the UN test method O.1. The lowest mean burning rate of 7.8 s was obtained with the mixture ratio sample to cellulose (4:1). This rate was less than the mean burning time of 12.6 s of a 3:2 mixture, by mass, of potassium bromate and cellulose. Therefore the substance met the classification criteria of Division 5.1, PG I and cesium nitrate has to be classified as oxidizing.

Supporting study:

Test on oxidizing properties of cesium nitrate was performed according to the EU Method A.17. The highest burning rate of 4.76 mm/s was obtained with the mixture of 80 % test item: 20 % cellulose. This rate was obviously higher than the highest rate of the reference mixtures (3.63 mm/s). With regard to all test results the test item is assessed to have oxidizing properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results of the "oxidising properties" test , the test item cesium nitrate is classified according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) in Cat.1; H271: May cause fire or explosion, strong oxidiser and according Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) in O; R9: Explosive when mixed with combustible material.
