Description of key information

The 72-h ErC50 and NOErC values for potassium trifluorozincate in freshwater algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) of 2.6 mg/L and 0.57 mg/L, respectively. These effect values are equivalent to 1.06 and 0.23 mg zinc/L and 0.92 and 0.20 mg fluoride/L based on the molecular weight fractions for zinc and fluoride of 40.7% and 35.4%, respectively.

Additional information

A GLP-compliant OECD 201 guideline study with alga (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) is available for potassium trifluorozincate. Algae were exposed to nominal concentrations of 0.1, 0.32, 1.0, 3.16 and 10 mg/L under static conditions for 72 hours. The 0.1, 1.0 and 10 mg/L test concentrations were analytically verified and this resulted in recoveries of 44-66% (mean 56.8%) throughout the test period. Therefore, biological effect concentrations are expressed based on mean measured test concentrations. In this study, statistically significant differences on growth rate and yield were found at nominal test concentration of ≥3.16 mg/L. The 72-h EC50 values for growth rate and yield are determined at 2.6 mg/L and 1.44 mg/L, respectively. The 72-h NOEC value is 0.568 mg/L for both endpoints.

As potassium trifluorozincate in water rapidly dissociates into its various ions, it is these ions that are expected to be present in the environment and which will therefore be assessed. Therefore, effect values for potassium trifluorozincate are also expressed as zinc and fluoride based on their respective molecular weight fractions (potassium is not assessed because of its environmental abundance and low toxicity). This leads to 72 -h ErC50 and NOErC values of 1.06 and 0.23 mg zinc/L and 0.92 and 0.20 mg fluoride/L.
