Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Yokohama Laboratories (Mitsubishi 2002) have provided a fully detailed high quality report with a 48 h EC50 of 2.47 mg/l. However, in a screening study with oligomeric MDA a lower EC50 in the range of 0.1 to 1 mg/l was reported and therefore, this lower EC50 (0.1 mg/l) will be used to determine the PNEC aqua.

Additional information

A full discussion on the justification on read-across of data for the 4,4´-isomer of MDA for oligomeric MDA in the scope of REACH is presented in section 7.6 of this CSR.

This study was carried out according to GLP (certificate included) and in which all described parameters are closely comparable to the standard OECD Guideline 202 method. The 48 hours EC50value of 2.47 mg/l indicates that MDA is toxic to invertebrates. The results confirm that for 4,4'-MDA invertebrates are the most sensitive species of the three trophic levels of the base-set (fish, daphnia and algae).

A screening study was performed with oligomeric MDA to confirm the classification and labelling for the environment. This was a non-GLP study performed in-house according to a standard screening protocol. Results for this study identified a 48h EC50 in the range 0.1 to 1 mg/l, which is lower than that identified for 4,4'-MDA. A full GLP study with oligomeric MDA is now being conducted.
