Study period:
July 2019 to February 2020
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EN 1839, Method T (Determination of explosion limits of gases and vapours)
Version / remarks:
2017
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
Deviation in the interpretation of results: Ignitions were determined by the presence of audible pressure waves; temperature increases and partial melting of the parafilm seal as no flame were detected.

ADDITIONAL SAMPLE 1
- Batch: B0912SR
- Expiration date of the lot/batch: May 2023

Key result
Parameter:
lower explosion limit
Value:
7 vol%
Key result
Parameter:
upper explosion limit
Value:
70 vol%

Ignitions were determined by the presence of audible pressure waves, temperature increases and partial melting of the parafilm seal as, in general, no flame were detected. Although according to the EN 1839 method, the criterion for an explosion is flame/halo propagation it was agreed that the audible signs, the temperature increase and the other visible indicators sufficiently evidence combustion although no flame is visible.

Interpretation of results:
Category 1 (flammable gases) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flammable range of the test item at temperature ca.20°C and atmospheric pressure is 7-70% (%v/v).
Executive summary:

The test covers the determination of the lower and upper flammability of a gas in air at atmospheric pressure and temperature.

The test is GLP complaint and it was conducted in accordance with the procedure described in BS EN 1839:2017 (Tube method) with inclusion of special adaptations for halogenated materials as described in Annex 1 of the EN 1839 standard (500 mm tube instead of 300 mm one).

Description of key information

The flammable range of the test item at temperature ca.20°C and atmospheric pressure is 7-70% (%v/v).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
flammable

Additional information

The flammability of perfluoromethyl vinyl ether was assessed in a Klimish-1 reliability study, GLP complaint and conducted in accordance with the procedure described in BS EN 1839:2017.

According to the results the flammable range of the test item at temperature ca.20°C and atmospheric pressure is 7-70% (%v/v).

Two additional data are available as supporting information. No details on the test methods are available for both the supporting studies however the conclusion are consistent whit the one of the key study:

LFL=7.0% vol. and UFL 73% vol. (Internal Company data without detailed documentation)

LFL=7.5% vol. and UFL 50% vol. (Company SDS)

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance fulfills the GHS/CLP classification criteria for Flammable Gas Category 1B  because at the temperature of 20 °C and the standard pressure of 101,3 kPa it is ignitable when in a mixture of 13 % or less by volume in air and the lower explosion limit is higher than 6% by volume in air.
