Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One key study is available on phosphinic acid in aqueous solution at 60% according to standard methods. Auto flammability was determined at 190°C therefore the hazard of spontaneous ignition at ambient temperature is very low.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
190 °C

Additional information

One key study is available on phosphinic acid in aqueous solution at 60% according to method A15 requirements from regulation (CE) n°440/2008 and under the standard procedure DIN 51794. Auto flammability was determined at 190°C therefore the hazard of spontaneous ignition at ambient temperature is very low.

According to different relevant sources (see ESS in 4.23 Additional Physico-chemical information,/Decomposition), phosphinic acid under its solid form decompose above 130°C to phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, hydrogen and phosphine, the latter containing sufficient diphosphine to make it spontaneously flammable. Therefore, the self-ignition temperature of the aqueous solution 60% is related to its grade.
