Details on results:
EC50 values determined at 24 and 48h post exposure based on nominal concentrations for Methanesulfonic Acid (MSA):
- EC50-24h = 38 mg/L
- EC50-48h = 29 mg/L
Results with reference substance (positive control):
EC50 obtained on 31/05/2007 was 0.95 mg/L.
Reported statistics and error estimates:
The inhibition of mobility data are analyzed using an Excel program. It was designed to calculate the EC50 value and the 95% confidence interval. Probit analysis is generally used to calculate the 24 and 48-hour EC50 values.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes

Conclusions:
Quality criteria:
- The immobilisation in the control should not exceed 10 per cent at the end of the test;
- Daphnids in the control have not be trapped at the surface of the water;
- The dissolved oxygen concentration remained above 3 mg/L over the test period.
Executive summary:

Acute toxicity of Methanesulfonyl chloride to Daphnia magna has been investigated through OECD Guideline 202.

Daphnia magna were exposed for 48 hours to an aqueous solution of Methanesulfonyl chloride at different nominal concentrations of 10 - 13.8 - 19 - 26.3 - 36.2 and 50 mg/L.

EC 50 - 48h determined is of 34 mg/L and EC50 - 24h is of 45 mg/L. As the substance is known to hydrolyze quite easily into methanesulfonic acid (MSA), EC50 -48h and EC50 -24h were calculated for MSA, and were respectively of 29 mg/L and 38 mg/L.

The quality criteria were fulfilled.
