Protection of Young People Directive

Physical, Biological and Chemical Agents & Processes and Work

This list contains biological and chemical agents, in accordance with Art. 7 and points 2 and 3 of the Annex to Directive 94/33/EC, to which young persons (under 18 years of age) may not be exposed at the workplace. The list is a non-exhaustive inventory of such substances based on: 1) agents of risk groups 3 and 4 under Directive 2000/54/EC; 2) Table 3 of Annex VI to the CLP Regulation; 3) and Annex I of Directive 2004/37/EC.

1 1. Included in the ''Non-exhaustive list of agents, processes and work'' against which young people must be protected. 2. Member States shall ensure that young people are protected from any specific risks to their safety, health and development which are a consequence of their lack of experience, or absence of awareness of existing or potential risks or of the fact that young people have not yet fully matured. 3. Work which is likely to entail specific risks for young people within the meaning of [the previous sentence] includes: a) work involving harmful exposure to the physical, biological and chemical agents referred to in point I of the Annex, and b) processes and work referred to in point II of the Annex. 3. Member states must implement this directive no later than 22 June 1996. The United Kingdom has been granted a four-year deferment for implementing the maximum weekly working time and night work.
