Appearance/physical state/colour :

3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is a colourless organic liquid with unpleasant odour.


Melting point/freezing point :

Melting point study need not to be conducted as the appearance of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is liquid.Hence this testing was considered waived.


Boiling point :

The boiling point of a substance is the (thermal) point at which a liquid substance gains enough thermal energy to become a gas. The boiling point of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is observed to be 147 degC at 960 hPa. The boiling point value at 101325 Pa works out to be 155.15 degC.


Density :

The principle of the method being ratio of concentrations of a compound in the two phases of a mixture of Octanol-Water at equilibrium, 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was estimated using the US EPA shake flask method. The log octanol/water partition coefficient (log Pow) of the substance was found to be 8.4 at a room temperature of 35 degC and pH of 5.92


Water solubility :

The principle of the method being ‘weight of the chemical substance (solute) to dissolve in Water to form a homogeneous solution of the solute in the solvent’ was referred to determine the water solubility of the substance.3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is considered to be insoluble in water .


Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility :

Gravimetric method was used to determine the solubility of the substance in organic solvent. The solubility of the substance in alcohol (methanol) is observed to be 1000000 mg/L at 35°C. Using the Soxhlet/Solvent extraction method the solubility of the substance in Petroleum ether is observed to be 1000000 mg/L at 35 °C.


Surface tension :

Surface tension is a property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force. The surface tension of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was estimated to be 38.826 mN/m at 25 degC.At 20 degC, this value works out to be 31.0608 mN/m .


Flash point :

The flash point of a substance is the lowest temperature at which it can form an ignitable mixture in air. The falsh point of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was estimated to be 43 degC at 960 hPa. Thus it can be concluded that 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate a flammable liquid.


Auto flammability :

The autoignition temperature or kindling point of a substance is the lowest temperature at which it will spontaneously ignite in a normal atmosphere without an external source of ignition, such as a flame or spark. The auto ignition temperature of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was determines in the laboratory but it was not found to ignite on exposure of the liquid vapours to air. Thus it can be concluded that 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is not auto flammable.


Flammability :

Flammability is defined as how easily something will burn or ignite, causing fire or combustion in contact with an ignition source. 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was found to be flammable when an ignitition source having temperature of around 950 degC was brought in close contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is a flammable liquid at high temperature.


Explosiveness :

According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure, 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate does not possess explosive properties. The reason for these is there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate. Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this information is not required.


Oxidising properties :

End point of the redox titration was obtained at 477.6mg/100g.This value indicates that 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate possess oxidising properties.


Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products :

Using the principle of changes in mass Spectra after dissolving in solvents, the 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate is considered to be stable in nature.


pH :

pH is measured as negative log of Hydrogen Ion concentration using pH meter & appropriate buffers of pH 4 & 9.pH of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate at 1% solution and temp.28 degC was found to be 7.76 .


Dissociation constant :

3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was found to be a weakly dissociating liquid with the pKa value of 0.0000000000000057 and 0.0000000000000055 obtained at 30 degrees C .


Viscosity :

The static viscosity of 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-6-yl acetate was found to be 21.384 centistokes (mm²/s) at 35 degC. The viscosity value at 20 degC works out to be 12.219 mm²/s.
