Additional information

The surface tension of the test material was determined using the ring method in a key study by Calmels (1996). The study was performed under GLP conditions and in line with the standardised guidelines OECD 115, EU Method A.5, ISO Standard 304 (1987) and AFNOR Standard NF T 73-060 (1980). Based on the principles for assessing data quality defined by Klimisch et al (1997), the study was assigned a reliability score of 1.

The maximum vertical force necessary to separate a ring from its contact with the surface of an aqueous solution of the test material was measured at concentration of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0 g/L. Once the test solution had equilibrated, three measurements were taken and the mean of the corrected values taken for each solution. All measurements were corrected for apparatus accuracy and in accordance with Hawkins and Jordans recommended correction factors.

The surface tension in the three solutions was measured to be 72.6, 72.6 and 72.4 mN/m at concentration of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 g/L, respectively. Since the surface tension is > 60 mN/m the test material is not considered to be surface active.
