Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The provided, analytically supported test data indicate that MMDS rapidly hydrolyses (average of 104 minutes) in water at pH7, forming MDSA and formaldehyde.
Stability information was available for the hydrolysis product MDSA: the substance MDSA tested as 50% water solution was shown by IR to be stable during the dosing period of the 28 day repeated dose study in rats.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
29 min
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

100 mg test substance MMDS was stirred in 1 liter water at 25°C. After appropriate time intervals, the test solutions were measured for MMDS by HPLC. Test solutions for which complete dissipation of MMDS was confirmed were measured for hydrolysis products (methandisulphonic acid (MDSA) and formaldehyde). Total dissipation of MMDS occurred in an average of 104 minutes at a pH of 7.

Stability information was available for the hydrolysis product MDSA: the substance MDSA tested as 50% water solution was shown by IR to be stable during the dosing period of the 28 day repeated dose study in rats. This was confirmed in the aquatic toxicity studies (see section 6.1)
