Oxygen depletion in the control vessels was 12% of the initial dissolved oxygen concentration and the residual concentration remained at 2.80 mg O2/L or greater in all vessels, thereby satisfying the validation criteria forthe oxygen depletion. Due to low aqueous solubility of the test material, following the recommendations of the International Standards Organisation (ISO 1995), the test material was adsorbed onto an inert support prior to addition to the test vessels.
The test material attained 68% degradation after 28 days and. therefore, can be considered to have the potential for biodegradation after 28 days in the marine environmnent. There was a lag phase prior to the start of degradation of about 1 day.
The toxicity control attained 63% degradation after 14 days and 77% after 28 days. The test material was not toxic to the marine organisms.
Description of key information
COASOL 290 PLUS is a reaction mass of dibutyl glutarate and dibutyl adipate, while COASOL is a reaction mass of the very similar isomers diisobutyl glutarate, diisobutyl succinate, and diisobutyl adipate. The results from a supporting study with COASOL are applied to COASOL 290 PLUS (read-across). The available biodegradation studies demonstrate that COASOL 290 PLUS was readily biodegradable in an OECD 301D Closed Bottle Test, whereas COASOL showed extensive biodegradation in an OECD 306 Biodegradability in Seawater Test.

COASOL 290 PLUS is a reaction mass of dibutyl glutarate and dibutyl adipate, while COASOL is a reaction mass of the very similar isomers diisobutyl glutarate, diisobutyl succinate, and diisobutyl adipate. Thus, results from studies for COASOL are applied to COASOL 290 PLUS (read-across). COASOL 290 PLUS was readily biodegradable in the OECD 301D test, reaching 80% in 28 days. The test substance also showed extensive biodegradation the the OECD 306 Biodegradability in Seawater test, reaching 68% in 28 days.
