Description of key information

For the evaluation of the skin irritating properties of tetraethylammonium perfluorobutanesulfonate an artificial 3D-skin model test according to OECD TG 439 was used.
The assessment of the eye irritating properties of tetraethylammonium perfluorobutanesulfonate was tested using the Hen's egg chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) test according to the ICCVAM Test Method Evaluation Report: Appendix G: ICCVAM Recommended Protocol for Future Studies Using the Hen's Egg Test-Chorionallantoic Membrane (HET-CAM) Test method, November 2006.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

Tetraethylammonium perfluorobutanesulfonate was not irritating in the artificial 3D-skin model and slightly irritating in the HET-CAM test

Effects on eye irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the results of the 3D-skin model evaluation a classification for skin irritation is not justified.

In the HET-CAM test tetraethylammonium perfluorobutanesulfonate was slightly irritating a classification as Xi, R36 (GHS: Cat. 2, H319 : Causes serious eye irritation) is proposed in the absence of in vivo data
