Description of key information

Reliable acute studies based on international guidelines are available for the three aquatic trophic levels (fish, algae and aquatic invertebrates) and for activated sludge.

Among the data available, a toxic effect was observed for these three aquatic trophic levels. The most sensitive species appears to be the fish Danio rerio with a 96-hour LC50 for Nopol of 11.1 mg/L based on nominal concentrations. For the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna, the 48h-EC50 of Nopol was of 28.8 mg test item.L-1 based on nominal concentrations and for aquatic algae, the 72-hour EC50 of Nopol to P. subcapitata for the parameters growth rate was 21.14 mg/L.

The effects of a chronic exposure to test item NOPOL on the reproduction of Daphnia magna was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 211. Under the experimental conditions and after 21 days, the NOEC value estimated for the most sensitive endpoint cumulative number of offspring was 0.4 mg test item.L-1.

Finally, it has been determined that the test substance Nopol is not harmful to activated sludge.
