Description of key information

'Yellow disazo condensation pigments' are with high probability not harmful to aquatic algae.
No toxic effects occur at the range of the substances solubility.
EC50 (72h) > 100 mg/L; NOEC = 40 mg/L (nominal) for growth rate of Desmodesmus subspicatus (OECD 201)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity on aquatic algae was investigated for one ‘yellow disazo condensation pigment’ (CAS 5280-80-8) (CETA, 2011). The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 201 under GLP conditions with the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus as test species. Based on the low water solubility of the test item, a saturated stock solution was prepared and the test was conducted as limit test with a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. The stock solution was filtered through 0.45 µm filter. After 72 hours of exposure the EC50 value for growth inhibition was > 100 mg/L. The data from a preliminary test were used for the determination of NOEC values. For growth inhibition the 72 hours NOEC is reported with 40 mg/L (nominal). Therefore it can be concluded that ‘yellow disazo condensation pigments’ cause no toxic effects on green algae within the range of solubility.
