Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Topical application to rabbit skin for periods of 3 minutes, one hour or four hours in a group of three rabbits resulted in no reactions (3 min exposure) or erythema, oedema and necrosis (1 and 4 hour exposures). The persistent reactions and irreversible damage caused by the longer exposure periods were evaluated as evidence of dermal corrosion. 2 -Ethylaminoethanol is classified as a skin corrosive (Cat 1B) in accordance with GHS or CLP (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) criteria.

Ocular reactions assessed by scoring responses in the cornea, iris and conjunctivae ranged from slight to severe for individuals and the mean scores for chemosis and corneal opacity exceeded classification thresholds. In addition the study observation period was completed only 8 days after instillation. The reactions in cornea, iris and conjunctivae had not resolved by termination and therefore the criteria of resolution or reversal before termination of the study was not met in this investigation. Persistent, irreversible slight to severe reactions require classification of 2 -ethylaminoethanol as Category 1 (irreversible effects on the eye) in accordance with GHS or CLP (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) criteria.

Justification for selection of skin irritation / corrosion endpoint:
Only one study available

Justification for selection of eye irritation endpoint:
Only one study available

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

The persistent reactions and irreversible damage caused resulted in classification as a skin corrosive (Cat 1B, according to Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation 1272/2008). Persistent, irreversible slight to severe reactions require classification of 2 -ethylaminoethanol as Category 1 (irreversible effects on the eye) according to CLP (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) criteria.
