Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One reliable acute toxicity data point (Klimisch 1, GLP) for a fish species -the zebrafish Danio rerio - has been identified. Based on measured total Ba-level in the water column, a 96h-LC50 of is reported by Egeler and Kiefer (2010), using barium dichloride dihydrate as test substance.

Additional information

One reliable acute toxicity data point (Klimisch 1, GLP) for a fish species -the zebrafish Danio rerio - has been identified. No effect (mortality) was noted at a nominal test concentration of 100 mg Ba2+/L.

Both the dissolved and total fraction was measured. A white substance was noted in the solution upon addition of BaCl2, most likely caused by the formation of the poorly soluble barium sulfate.

However, at a nominal concentration of 100 mg Ba2+/L, the dissolved and total barium concentrations were 3.5 and 97.5 mg/L, respectively.

Translating the latter value to BaCl2, a 96h-LC50of > 147.8 mg BaCl2/L is derived based on total barium concentration in test solution. Nevertheless, re-calculation of the 96h-LC50 of > 3.5 mg dissolved barium/L results in an LC50of > 5.3 mg BaCl2/L.
