Reference
Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
19 Jan - 23 Mar 1993
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Version / remarks:
84/449
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
ring method
Surface tension:
72.18 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C
Conc.:
1.001 g/L

No time dependence of the surface tension was observed within a test period of 0 - 3 hours. The values of both measurements were therefore averaged. (= 72.2  +/- 0.087 mN/m).

Validity criteria for the measurement of the surface tension:

Target condition according to guideline:Actual condition according to the study:Validity criteria met:
The individual results, their arithmetic mean and the corrected mean; concentration of the solution should be stated.

Individual results, mean and corrected mean values including tested concentration are stated within the report.

yes
A solution of the substance is prepared in distilled water. The concentration of this solution should be 90 % of the saturation solubility of the substance in water; when this concentration exceeds 1 g/ L, a concentration of 1 g/ L is used for testing.

The water solubility of the test substance was >1g/L. Therefore, 1 g/L was used for testing.

yes
Conclusions:
The surface tension at 20°C is 72.18 mN/m (+/- 0.087 mN/m). The test substance is not surface-active.
Executive summary:

The study was conducted to assess the surface tension. The study was conducted in accordance with EEC Method for "determination of the surface tension", Directive 84/449/EEC, method A.5. The surface tension at 20°C is 72.18 mN/m (+/- 0.087 mN/m). The test substance is not surface-active.
