Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
22 Feb - 22 Feb 2002
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
step 1
step 2
step 3
step 4
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed

Stage 1:
The test substance was added to a dish containing distilled water. No formation of reaction gases was observed. Attempts to ignite the gas phase above the dish with the flame of a burner produced negative results.

Stage 2:
The test substance was introduced to a filter paper floating on the surface of the destilled water contained in a dish. No formation of reaction gases was observed. Attempts to ignite the gas phase above the filter paper produced negative results.

Stage 3:

A few drops of water were added to a sample of the test substance. No formation of reaction gases was observed. Ignition attempts of the gas phase produced negative results.

Stage 4:

Water (ca. 20 mL) was added from a dropping funnel to the quantities of test substance specified below. One test run was performed.

The following total quantities of liberated gas were determined by using a miniature
gasometer.

 Test run 1
Test sample weights10.0 g
TimeTotal gas evolution rate
60 min0 L/kg*h
120 min0 L/kg*h
180 min0 L/kg*h
240 min0 L/kg*h
300 min0 L/kg*h
360 min0 L/kg*h
420 min0 L/kg*h

Liberation of gas could not be observed after water addition was initiated.

Validity criteria for the measurement of the flammability:

Target condition according to guideline 92/69/EWG A. 12:Actual condition according to the study:Validity criteria met:
The report shall include the results of the tests (steps 1, 2, 3 and 4) and the chemical identity of gas evolved. The results of the steps are stated. No gas evolution occured.Yes
The rate of evolution of gas if step 4 is performed shall be stated. No gas evolution occured.Yes

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test substance does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts when tested according to this procedure. The substance does not emit flammable gases on contact with water.
Executive summary:

The test substance does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts when tested according to this procedure. The substance does not emit flammable gases on contact with water.
