Description of key information

In contact with water, aluminium is the major constituent released from "Neutralisation and reduction products of bauxite residue from refinement process". For the assessment of the aquatic toxicity potential, effects of different aluminium compounds can be used as read-across to "Neutralisation and reduction products of bauxite residue from refinement process".

In summary, all relevant information on aquatic toxicity using various water soluble aluminium salts was evaluated in the risk assessment of "Neutralisation and reduction products of bauxite residue from refinement process".

The most sensitive result reported in long-term toxicity testing to fish (60-day NOEC in reproduction of 13 µg Al/L; Cleveland et al., 1980) is carried forward in the hazard and risk assessment.
