With:

T1 : time from application of the flame to a noticeable effect from the orifice.

T2: time from application of the flame to the end of the combustion without recorded event (e.g. explosion) as in these tests or to an explosion.

Based on these results, DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE has been determined not to have thermal sensitivity to explosion.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE does not present a danger of explosion under the conditions of the test.
Executive summary:

The determination of the explosion properties of the liquid test item (i.e.DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE) has been performed according to EEC Directive 92/69 Part A14 and the GLP.

The test was performed as follows:

1) Shock test:

The test was done on liquid test item. A10 kg weight was dropped from a height of 40 cm, on to the test assembly containing 40 mm3 of the test material. The test was repeated six times.

None of those tests was positive, so the six other tests with a weight of 5 kg dropped from a height of 15 cm were not performed.

2) Thermal sensitivity test:

The test material was tested as received. Steel tubes were filled to a height of 60 mm. The test was conducted in accordance with the laboratory's MON (SOP), with a minor modification to the tube packing procedure proposed in guideline EEC Directive 92/69/A14. This modification did not have any effect on the conclusion.

The test item filled was weighted. The tube was heated by four propane burners. Three tests were performed with a6 mmorifice plate and three tests with a 2 mm orifice plate.

Samples were injected by means of a volumetric syringe to assure a rapid injection. The time lag between injection and ignition was measured for all tests up to 5 minutes. The test vessel was flushed with air, then a sufficient time interval was allowed to ensure temperature stabilisation for the next test.

In the shock test, no ignition or explosion was observed. Therefore, DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE does not have shock sensitivity to explosion under the test conditions.

In the thermal sensitivity test, no explosion was observed. Therefore, DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE does not have thermal sensitivity to explosion under the test conditions.

Description of key information

In the shock test, no ignition or explosion was observed. Therefore,DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE does not have shock sensitivity to explosionunder the test conditions.

In the thermal sensitivity test, no explosion was observed. Therefore,DIMETHYL 2-METHYL GLUTARATE does not have thermal sensitivity to explosionunder the test conditions.
