Description of key information

The substance, as distributed in commerce, is a waxy solid containing 40% oil which begins to liquify at 85.9 deg. C.  The flash point of the de-oiled,  substance is 177 deg. C as determined by  ASTM D93 (Pensky-Martens closed cup method).

The results of four tests showed flash points ranging from 57 – 177 deg. C with only one test result giving a flash point of 57 deg. C and three tests showing flash points of > 150 deg. C.


The low flash point measurement of 57 deg. C has been traced to residual solvent (heptane) used for de-oiling the test substance. This result was not reproduced in subsequent tests. The reliability of this previously submitted study has been revised to R3. 


A key study has been identified which shows the flash point of the substance is 177 deg. C. This result is consistent with two additional tests (identified as supporting studies) on two different batches, of the substance which showed flash points of > 150 deg. C and > 220 deg. C. Based on the results obtained for three of the four studies, a flash point value of 177 deg. C is considered to provide a more reliable indication of the flammability of the substance.
