Description of key information

The EC50 based on both cell number decrease and growth rate was >1000 mg/l and it is therefore concluded that Santicizer 278 is non-toxic to algae. Due its structure and properties Santicizer 261A would be expected to give similar results and is therefore considered to be non-toxic to algae at its limit of solubility based on read-across.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

There is no reliable experimental data available for this endpoint for Santicizer 261A.

A study was available which used the structurally comparable phthalate Santicizer 278 (Hollister, 1979) and so was selected as key Study for this endpoint.  The 96-hour EC50 based on both cell number decrease and growth rate was >1000 mg/l. This far exceeds the solubility of the test compound (0.0015 mg/l at 25°C) and it is therefore concluded that Santicizer 278 is non-toxic to algae. The similarity of Santicizer 278 to Santicizer 261A® means it is appropriate to read across from Santicizer 278 for this endpoint to Santicizer 261A®, and toxicity to algae would therefore not be expected.

Santicizer 261A is therefore considered to be non-toxic to algae at its limit of solubility based on read-across.
