Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A BCF of 840 is estimated using read across.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

BCF (aquatic species):
840 dimensionless

Additional information

A measured BCF is not available for Santicizer 261A. As the calculated log Kow of S261A is >3 the bioaccumulation endpoint cannot be waived. However, ECHA's Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment R7c Endpoint Specific Guidance (2008) indicates that before commissioning a new vertebrate test alternative sources of data on the bioaccumulation potential of a chemical should used.

Data is read across from the key study (Mehrle and Mayer, 1976). It found 14C-labelled DEHP (CAS RN: 117 -81 -7) had BCFs ranging from 155 to 886 across seven concentrations and a control. The lowest three concentrations were closest to the solubility of DEHP and had the higher BCFs in the range. The European Union Risk Assessment Report for DEHP (2008) uses this study as its key study and concludes a mean BCF for fish for DEHP of 840. This value is also used in the risk assessment reports for DINP and DIDP - the other read-across substances.

Another study cited in the DEHP RAR (European Chemicals Bureau (2008) is Mackintosh et al, 2004 which also investigated the potential for biomagnification of 13 phthalate esters, including DEHP, using an 18-species aquatic food web. They found that rather than biomagnification, the high molecular weight PEs (including DEHP) undergo trophic dilution.

These findings are supported by a QSAR result (BCFBAF, USEPA, 2008) of 2900 L/kg for Santicizer 261A.

Read across from the closely related substances DEHP, DINP and DIDP is considered appropriate for this endpoint, and therefore a value of BCF 840 for Santicizer 261A will be used.
