Studies investigating acute toxic effects of the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4) on aquatic invertebrates are not available. Thus, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substances Bis(7-methyloctyl) adipate (CAS 33703-08-1), and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) was conducted to fulfil the data requirements. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. This read-across is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

The short-term toxicity of the source substance Bis(7-methyloctyl) adipate (CAS 33703-08-1) to Daphnia magna was tested in a guideline study according to Directive 79/831/EWG, appendix V, part C. Daphnia magna were exposed to nominal test concentrations ranging between 0.049 and 100 mg/L (spacing factor 2). The determined EC50 (48 h) was > 100 mg/L (nominal).

One study on the short-term toxicity of the source substance Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) is available. The test was conducted according to OECD 202 as a semi-static limit test at a nominal test substance concentration of 50 mg/L (48 mg/L meas. geom. mean). An immobilisation of Daphnids was not observed and an EC50 (48 h) >48 mg/L (meas. geom. mean) was reported.

Based on the available data for the read across substances no acute toxic effects on aquatic invertebrates are expected within the limits of water solubility of the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4).
