Studies testing the ready biodegradability of Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4)are not available. The assessment is based on read-across data available for thestructurally and chemically closely related source substances Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1), Dioctyl adipate(CAS 123-79-5) and Bis(6-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 1330-86-5). The read-across was performed in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, section 1.5 in order to fulfil the data requirements for this substance. This read-across is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

The source substanceBis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) reached a biodegradation rate of 96% after 28 days in a guideline study following OECD 301B. The biodegradability of the source Dioctyl adipate (CAS 123-79-5) was tested in a study according to OECD guideline 301D at test substance concentrations of 2 and 5 mg/L, respectively. Degradation rates were >67% after 30 d for both test concentrations. The source Bis(6-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 1330-86-5) was degraded by 70.22% after 28 d in a study according to OECD 301F. All tests on the source substances were performed with non-adapted activated sludge as inoculum and the ten-day window criterion was met in all three studies.

Based on the available results from structurally related read-across substances (in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which are characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4) is readily biodegradable.
