Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 2018-12-24 to 2019-03-22
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Remarks:
Study performed to UN Manual of Tests and Criteria with no significant deviations and run in OECD GLP certified lab.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Version / remarks:
2015
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Purity: 99.7%
Batch No.: 80031745a
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
<= 1 s
Remarks on result:
other:
Remarks:
The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test item pile. The test item melted, burned with a orange and blue flame and turned into a brown residue. Grey smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished after 1 second and no propagation of combustion was observed.
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test item is considered 'not flammable'.
Executive summary:

The study was conducted according to UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids).

No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test item is considered 'not flammable'.

Description of key information

Flammability:

No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test item is considered 'not flammable'.

Pyrophoric solids:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

Flammability in contact with water:

The study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Flammability:

The study was conducted according to UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1.

No propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test item is considered 'not flammable'.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Flammability:

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.7.2.1, powdered, granular or pasty substances shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs is less than 45 seconds. As no propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed, this substance should not be classified as flammable solids.

Pyrophoric solids:

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.10.4.1, the classification procedure for pyrophoric solids need not be applied when experience in manufacture or handling shows that the substance or mixture does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures (i.e. the substance is known to be stable at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days)). As experience show this substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperature, so the classification procedure for pyrophoric solids need not be applied for this substance.

Substances and mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases:

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.12.4.1(a), the classification procedure for this class need not be applied if the chemical structure of the substance or mixture does not contain metals or metalloids. As no metals or metalloids present in the molecule of this substance, so the classification procedure for this class need not be applied for this substance.
