The substances of the glycol esters category are readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions, as confirmed by the available experimental data. The first step of biodegradation is the enzyme-catalysed cleavage of the ester bond by lipase or esterase; enzymes which are synthesized by a wide range of microorganisms (Boczar et al., 2001). The free fatty acids (C4 to C24 incl. C18 unsatd.) will be degraded rapidly and utilized as substrates by the activated sludge microorganisms (Kangala & Medrzycka, 2008). Since the substances are expected to be rapidly mineralised by biodegradation in the environment abioticdegradation by hydrolysis is not relevant. The substances within the glycol esters category have a high adsorption potential based on QSAR calculations.

 

Taking into account all relevant data for the assessment of the bioaccumulation potential, it can be concluded that the substances of the glycol esters category have a low potential for bioaccumulation and for biomagnification in a food chain.
