Executive summary:

Introduction

The oxidising properties of the test substance were assessed using the procedure described in UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Test O.2.

Method

The test is designed to determine the potential for a liquid substance to increase the burning rate or burning intensity of a combustible substance when the two are thoroughly mixed, or to form a mixture which spontaneously ignites. The test method measures the pressure rise time during deflagration. The test liquid is mixed in a 1:1 ratio (by mass) with fibrous cellulose and the mixture heated in a pressure vessel to evaluate the rate of pressure rise. The results are compared with data obtained in the same equipment for mixtures of cellulose with known, characterised oxidants.

Results

The 1:1 mixture of the test substance and cellulose was observed to have a mean pressure rise time greater than that of the 1:1 mixture of 65% nitric acid and cellulose

Conclusion

The test substance was determined to be non-oxidising.
