First-aid measures

Inhalation : Over-exposure by inhalation may cause respiratory irritation (coughing).

Skin contact : Slightly irritating to the skin (redness).

Eye contact : May cause eye irritation (redness).

Ingestion : There is no known acute effect after over-exposure to this product.

First-aid measures:

General : Move exposed person to fresh air.

Inhalation : If inhaled, remove to fresh air. Obtain medical attention if symptoms persist.

Skin contact : Rinse with plenty of running water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Obtain medical attention if symptoms persist.

Eye contact : Rinse with plenty of running water for several minutes. Obtain medical attention if symptoms persist.

Ingestion : If swallowed, rinse mouth with water (only if the person is conscious). Obtain medical attention if symptoms persist.

First aid facilities : Ensure that eyewash stations and safety showers are close to the workstation location.

Fire-fighting measures

Small fire : Suitable : Use dry chemical or CO2.

Large fire: Suitable : Use water, foam or dry chemical powder.

Unusual fire/explosion hazards : Fine dust clouds may form explosive mixtures with air.

Hazardous thermal decomposition products: In case of fire, may produce hazardous decomposition products such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2), ammonia (NH3), amines.

Special fire-fighting procedures : No special measures required.

Protection of fire-fighters : Wear suitable protective clothing. Self-contained breathing apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions:

Avoid creating dusty conditions and prevent wind dispersal. Use suitable protective equipment (see section on Exposure controls/personal protection). Keep away from sources of ignition.

Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Use explosion-proof electrical (ventilating, lighting and material handling) equipment. Use low-sparking hand tools.

Environmental precautions:

Prevent entry into sewers, basements or confined areas. Dyke if necessary.

Clean-up Methods:

Small spill and leak:

Vacuum or sweep-up material and place in a designated labelled waste container. Clean-up affected area with a large amount of water.

Large spill and leak:

Vacuum or sweep-up material and place in a designated labelled waste container. Clean-up affected area with a large amount of water. Use explosion-proof electrical (ventilating, lighting and material handling) equipment.

Handling and storage

This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH Regulation Article 18 for transported isolated intermediates. Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk based management systems is available at the use site.

Handling :       Use with adequate ventilation. Local exhaust ventilation should be provided. Avoid creating dusty conditions and prevent wind dispersal.

Use explosion-proof electrical (ventilating, lighting and material handling) equipment.

Take measures against static discharge. Keep away from sources of ignition.

Storage :       Store in a fireproof location. Keep away from incompatible materials and avoid specific conditions (see section on stability and reactivity).

Keep container tightly closed and dry. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight.

Packaging materials Suitable:

Primary packaging: polyethylene line. Secondary packaging: Big-bag.

Exposure controls / personal protection

See "Handling" for Stricly Controlled Conditions under which the substance is to be handled.

Engineering measures:

Use only with adequate ventilation. Local exhaust ventilation should be provided. Use explosionproof electrical (ventilating, lighting and material handling) equipment. Use low-sparking hand tools.

Hygiene measures:

When using do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash hands after handling compounds and before eating, smoking, using lavatory, and at the end of day.

Personal protective equipment - Production scale:

Respiratory system: Wear dust protection mask P2.

Skin and body: Working clothes.

Eyes: Safety glasses with side shields.

Hands: Wear suitable gloves.

Recommended material(s):

> 8 hours (breakthrough time): Practical experience has shown that gloves of polychloroprene (neoprene), nitril rubber, butyl rubber, fluor rubber (Viton) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) offer sufficient protection against (undissolved) solids. Replace damaged gloves.

Internal DSM MAC value:

Total dust: 10 mg/ m3/ 8 hours.

Respirable dust: 5 mg/ m3/ 8 hours.

Advice on personal protection is applicable for high exposure levels. Select proper personal protection based on a risk assessment of the actual exposure situation.

Stability and reactivity

Stability:

Stable under recommended storage and handling conditions (see section on handling and storage). Sublimes at 303 to 307 °C.

Conditions to avoid:

Keep away from sources of ignition.

Materials to avoid:

Strong oxidizing materials.

Hazardous decomposition products:

In case of fire: see section on fire-fighting measures.

Disposal considerations

Methods of disposal (waste of residues; contaminated packaging):

Waste must be disposed of in accordance with national and local environmental regulation (Spain: Ley 11/1997 – Europe: Directives 94/62/EC).
