Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Degradation: Tosylchloramide sodium is readily biodegradable. Under sterile, dark conditions Tosylchloramide sodium is slowly hydrolysed to para-toluenesulfonamide (p-TSA). When exposed to light this reaction rate increases. When exposed to organic matter or other oxidizable constituents as found in soil, sludge, sediment or surface water Tosylchloramide sodium is almost instantaneously degraded to p-TSA. In soil and sludge a half-life of a few hours is considered to be a realistic worst-case. In surface water a half-life of 1 day is considered to be a realistic worst-case.

Distribution: Tosylchloramide sodium has a low measured log Kowshowing that it has a low bioaccumulation potential. Tosylchloramide sodium has a high water solubility and low vapour pressure and will neither evaporate from water nor from soil. Tosylchloramide sodium or its degradation product p-TSA has a low soil-water partition coefficient.

Fate: Tosylchloramide sodium disintegrates during its use. After use the remaining Tosylchloramide sodium may enter the environment. If emitted to soil, or sewer system, Tosylchloramide sodium will react immediately to p-TSA. In surface water it will also rapidly be transformed into p-TSA. p-TSA has a lower intrinsic toxicity compared to Tosylchloramide sodium. Two acute fish and one Daphnia test gave LC/EC50of 100 mg/L and higher. P-TSA is readily biodegradable and was present in all tests performed with Tosylchloramide sodium. In fact in a few tests where after initiation of the test Tosylchloramide sodium is rapidly transformed into p-TSA, it is more likely that p-TSA was tested than Tosylchloramide sodium.
