Description of key information

There are no reliable irritation data for [2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl]trichlorosilane (CAS 78560-45-9, EC 278-947-6). Severe skin, eye and respiratory damage would be expected due to release of HCl. However, in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the in vitro skin irritation study (required in Section 8.1.1) and the in vitro eye irritation study (required in Section 8.2.1) do not need to be conducted as [2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl]trichlorosilane hydrolyses rapidly in contact with water and moist air, releasing three moles of hydrogen chloride (HCl) for each mole of parent material. The production of hydrogen chloride indicates that the substance meets the criteria for classification as corrosive to skin.
