activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage
Details on inoculum:
A mixed population of activated sewage sludge micro-organisms obtained from a sewage treatment plant in Belper, Derbyshire, UK which treats predominantly domestic sewage.
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
no
Total exposure duration:
3 h
Post exposure observation period:

Nominal and measured concentrations:
Nominal concentrations were 0 (control), 320, 560, 1000, 1800 and 3200 mg/L.
Details on test conditions:
Test temperature: 21˚C.
pH: Inoculum prior to application: pH 7.2.
Values recorded in individual test vessels in results section
Aeration of dilution water: Three hours, continuous.
Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
3,5-dichlorophenol
Key result
Duration:
3 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
1 500 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
inhibition of total respiration
Duration:
30 min
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
2 500 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
inhibition of total respiration
Details on results:
The EC50 (30 minutes) was 2500 mg/L and the corresponding 3 hour value was 1500 mg/L.
Results with reference substance (positive control):
The 3,5-dichlorophenol EC50 (30 minutes) was 9.4 mg/L and the corresponding 3 hour value was 5.7 mg/L. The validity criterion for the result is that it should be between 5 and 30 mg/L, therefore the results of this study are valid.

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The EC50 (30 minutes) was 2500 mg/L and the corresponding 3 hour value was 1500 mg/L.
Executive summary:

The toxicity to bacteria of 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-, allyl ether was investigated according to OECD 209. Activated sludge (mixed population of different micro-organisms) was exposed for 3 hours to nominal concentrations of 320, 560, 1000, 1800 and 3200 mg/L. Two controls without test substance are included in the test design. 3,5-dichlorophenol was used as a reference substance.

Based on the results of oxygen consumption, the EC50 (3h) for 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-, allyl etherw as estimated to be 1500 mg/L, indicating low toxicity of 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-, allyl ether to aerobic waste water bacteria.

Description of key information
