PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The PBT assessment of 2,5-bis(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)benzene-1,4-diol is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2017).

Persistence

2,5-bis(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)benzene-1,4-diol is not readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria. Abiotic degradation by hydrolysis is nto expected since the substance does not comprise any hydrolysable groups. Based on the available data, persistence of the substance cannot be excluded. The substance must therefore be considered as P or vP.

Bioaccumulation

A BCF of 271 was determined for 2,5-bis(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)benzene-1,4-diol in a study conducted according to OECD guideline 305. Based on the low BCF value the substance is not considered to be B or vB.

Toxicity

Toxic effects of 2,5-bis(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)benzene-1,4-diol on aquatic organisms were not observed. All available acute and chronic aquatic effect concentrations are > 1 mg/L. The substance is classified as STOT Rep. Exp. 2 (H373) according to the consolidated Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and further amendments (ATPs). Therefore, the substance meets the screening criteria for toxicity and is considered to be T.

In conclusion, the substance is not PBT/vPvB.
