Conclusions:
Duplicate determinations were performed to ensure a reproducibility of less than ± 20 kg/m3 was obtained.
The mass density of a substance varies with temperature and pressure and this variance is typically negligible for solids. Increasing the temperature of a substance may decrease its density by increasing thevolume of that substance. Typical thermal expansion coefficients of solids are in the order of 10-5 °C-1,and the volumetric expansion of stainless steel (used as calibration spheres) at 20 °C is approximately 5.2 x 10-5 °C-1. Therefore, a change in temperature of several degrees will have no significant effect on the volume and hence the density of a solid substance.
