Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The key study was an activated sludge respiration inhibition test on of methyl benzoate (a member of the same chemical category, based on read-across), conducted in accordance with an established guideline and GLP.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
815 mg/L

Additional information

The microbial toxicity of the substance was determined from an activated sludge respiration inhibition test on methyl benzoate(a member of the same chemical category, based upon read-across); the EC50 was reported as 815 mg/L.

This information is from the substance, methyl benzoate, (CAS RN 93-58-3) as part of a category approach used for the assessment of several endpoints of isopropyl benzoate (CAS RN 939-48-0), the registered substance. The hypothesis for the category of Alkyl Benzoates is a common functional group (a benzoic acid ester) of similar carbon chain length. This small difference in carbon chain length and molecular weight between the ester groups of methyl benzoate and isopropyl benzoate is not anticipated to have a significant effect on toxicity or environmental behaviour.  For each endpoint study based upon read-across, the category approach is substantiated by an evaluation provided in the Chemical Category Report Format (CCRF) attached to the endpoint study summary file. The CCRF provides the rationale so that the read-across information cited to fulfil the information requirements of the REACH Annexes VII-X may form the basis for classification and labelling decisions, hazard assessment and risk assessment.
