A computed value on the theoretical oxygen demand, and experimental values on total oxygen demand (TOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD, resulting from oxydation by potassium dichromate), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) , and the removal of vinylbenzyl chloride from water by aeration are given. BOD values, when compared to the theoretical oxygen demand, or TOD, give an indication of the degradability of the compounds with the seed material (bacteria) obtained from a general wastewater treatment system. An additional aeration value denotes the disappearance of the compound from water after 4 hours aeration.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

Using effluent from general wastewater treatment as the seed, a biochemical oxygen demand of 0.16 and 0.58 pts/pt (parts of oxygen demand per part of vinylbenzyl chloride) was determined after 5 and 10 days, respectively. The total oxygen demand was found to be 2.54 (pts/pt). 5% of the compound were removed after 4 hours of aeration. The results may suggest that vinylbenzyl chloride is not readily biodegradable.
