Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test)
Version / remarks:
modified to differentiate between toxic effects and indirect effects by light absorption
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
due to the modification for dyestuffs
Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Principle of test: two part of the test:
part A: the algae grew in test media with dissolved dyestuff in Erlenmeyer flasks, each placed in a black cylinder. The cylinders were covered with glass dishes, containing untreated test water.
part B: the algae grew in test media without dissolved dyestuff in Erlenmeyer flasks, each placed in a black cylinder. The cylinders were covered with glass dishes, containing coloured dyestuff solutions with the same five test concentrations as in part A (without algae).
- Parameters analyzed / observed: part A: toxic effect and indirect effect by light absorption; part B: indirect effect by light absorption
GLP compliance:
yes

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Conclusions:
Based on toxic and indirect effects due to light absorption, the 72-h ErC50 to Scenedesmus subspicatus was determined to be 36.1 mg/L. The 72-h ErC50 considering real algicidal effects is 61.4 mg/L. The 72-h ErC10 was not determined exactly but was reported as >= 10 mg/L in the ETAD summary. The test item is considered acutely harmful to to freshwater green algae. The test item is the hydrolyzed form of the reactive dye. Since reactive dyes moderately hydrolyse in water at neutral pH conditions, this is considered the environmentally relevant form of the test item.
