Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Triethoxy(hexadecyl)silane (CAS 16415-13-7) hydrolyses slowly under neutral pH conditions (half-live 58.4 h at pH 7 and 20-25 °C). However, hydrolysis increases strongly under acidic and basic pH conditions (1.0 h at pH 4 and 0.7 h at pH 9 (20-25 °C)). Taking the hydrolysis half-time into account, the environmental hazard assessment for the aquatic compartment, including waste water treatment plant, is based on the properties of the parent substance in accordance with REACH guidance for Chemical Safety Assessment R.16 (ECHA, 2016).

Hydrolysis products are hexadecylsilanetriol and ethanol. Triethoxyhexadecylsilane is not readily biodegradable but considered to be inherently biodegradable (57% after 28 d and 65% after 60 d, OECD 301F).

The parent substance and its silanol hydrolysis product exhibit low volatility. Therefore, indirect photodegradation is not an important degradation pathway. Triethoxyhexadecylsilane has a high potential for adsorption (log Koc > 5). If released to the environment the substance is expected to mainly adsorb to organic sediment and soil particles.
