- The objective of the test is to determine the behaviour of the test item during a heating procedure under nitrogen and at the atmospheric pressure using the Differential Scanning Calorimetry method (DSC). This thermodynamic information allows determining if the test item gives exothermic reactions upon heating and thus a more complete test on explosive properties is relevant.

- One assay with four phases was performed during the test. Only the heating phases are shown below.
One exothermic large peak was observed from about 545°C to 570°C, during the first phase.
The enthalpy difference was 201.4 J/g.
Neither endothermic nor exothermic peak was observed up to 500°C under the experimental conditions used during the third phase.

During the first phase, one exothermic peak was observed from about 545°C to 570°C. The exothermic decomposition energy was less than 500 J/g (201.4 J/g), so the test item shall not be classified as explosive and the test on explosive properties according to EC A14 method or series 1 to 3 from UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Model Regulations (UN RTDG Model Regulations) following EC No. 1272/2008 (CLP) should not be performed.

- Executive summary:
In a study (2015), the exothermic reactions of trifluoromethanesulphonic anhydride were observed by DSC analysis, under GLP conditions.
An aliquot of test item was placed into a crucible. The lid was fitted and the crucible was placed in the DSC analyser. Two phases of heating were programmed. The heating procedure was performed at 5 °C/min from room temperature to 600°C.
During the first phase, one exothermic peak was observed from about 545°C to 570°C. The exothermic decomposition energy was less than 500 J/g (201.4 J/g), so the test item shall not be classified as explosive and the test on explosive properties according to EC A14 method or series 1 to 3 from UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Model Regulations (UN RTDG Model Regulations) following EC No. 1272/2008 (CLP) should not be performed.
