Chemistry /elemental analysis was determined using ICP (inductively Coupled Plasma spectroscopy). Metal speciation/metal mineralogy was assessed from Sequential extraction/metal analysis and mineralogical analysis (XRD and microscopes equipped with EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectrometry) and WDS (Wavelength Dispersive Spectrometry) analysers. The interpretation of the overall results was performed by expert (with profound knowledge of metal particularities).

Results:
Results from the analys of sample 09TT08069 have been removed from this IUCLID record in light of refinements to the SIP and to reflect the active registrant list. The legacy data are still contained in the Outotec report attached.

The studied sample 09TT08044 contains 30.3 % lead, 17.7% SiO2, 9.6% iron, 6.7% CaO, 4.6% copper, 4.5% zinc, 4.2% Al2O3, 1.6% arsenic and traces of other elements.

The studied sample 09TT08044 consists mainly of lead silicate (63.4%). It forms complex particles with FeZnNi oxides (12.7%), magnetite (10.2), chalcocite (3.9%) and calcium silicates (3.9%). Lead silicates are also the main carriers of lead and arsenic. Iron is mainly carried by magnetite.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Good quality study that assessed full chemistry and mineralogy of a representative sample of slags lead reverbatory smelting. The mineralogy (and the distribution pattern for each key element, i.e. % from Total into the various mineralogical forms/species present into the UVCB) of the reference samples can be used to derive the classification of slags lead reverbaotry smelting samples (mixture toxicity rules).
Executive summary:

The studied sample 09TT08044 consists mainly of lead silicate (63.4%). It forms complex particles with FeZnNi oxides (12.7%), magnetite (10.2), chalcocite (3.9%) and calcium silicates (3.9%). Lead silicates are also the main carriers of lead and arsenic. Iron is mainly carried by magnetite.

The mineralogy of the reference sample can be used to derive the classification of both samples but also to predict the mineralogy of other slags lead reverbatory smelting samples. Differences in speciation between the two original reference samples initially suggested the need for two grades of this intermediate based on the sulphur content. However, since it turned out that both speciation patterns resulted in very similar classifications for all company specific samples, it was decided to revert to a single grade for this intermediate. The registrant of high-sulphur sample has since deactivated the registration and thus this record only discusses the sample of the active registrant.
