Specific details on test material used for the study:
4-chloroformylphthalic anhydride
Test procedure:
ignition time on contact with air
Remarks on result:
not measured/tested

The test item is typically very pure. None of the components does contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air.

Moreover the test item was handled under normal laboratory conditions during other studies in the same project.

It demonstrated that the test item does not ignite in contact with air at room temperature.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is considered to possess NO pyrophoric properties.
Executive summary:

A statement was made to conclude on the pyrophoric properties of the test item.

This statement has been done according to recognized guidelines (UN N.2 and Screening Procedures; EU A.13) and under GLP. No deviation from the guidelines was recorded.

Based on the composition of the test item and normal laboratory handling, the test item is considered to possess NO pyrophoric properties.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
An expert statement has been written, based on CLP/UN screening procedure criteria.

Additionally, the substance belongs to the chemical family of anhydrides, which is well-known to hydrolyse very rapidly into the corresponding acid if contact with water (or moisture), but no release of gas is expected.

Specific details on test material used for the study:
4-chloroformylphthalic anhydride
Test procedure:
step 1
Remarks on result:
not measured/tested

The test item is typically very pure. None of the components does contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with water and/or to the evolution of a flammable gas.

To obtain information on the water reactivity of the test item a water solubility test was performed. The test item was dissolved in double distilled water at a nominal concentration of 4.3 g/l. No spontaneously ignition of the test item and no evolution of a flammable gas was observed.

In conclusion, the test item is considered ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is considered to possess NO flammable properties in contact with water.
Executive summary:

A statement was made to conclude on the flammable properties of the test item in contact with water.

This statement has been done according to recognized guidelines (UN N.5 and Screening Procedures; EU A.12) and under GLP. No deviation from the guidelines was recorded.

Based on the composition of the test item and water solubility test, the test item is considered to possess NO flammable properties in contact with water.

Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
According to ECHA Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria (v5.0, July 2017, §2.11.4.2.), the phenomenon of self-heating generally applies only to solids.
Horeover, the substance is a low melting solid, turning liquid under UN N4 test conditions, which is not anymore applicable to liquids. Moreover, melting is an endothermic phenomenon, and also the chemical structure does not contain metals, which are typically self-heating substances.
Therefore the hazard class does not apply.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information

Description of key information

No propagation of combustion if contact with a flame.

Not flammable if contact with air or water (waived).

No self-heating anticipated for low melting solids (waived).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

As the substance is a solid, the relevant test for classification regarding flammable properties is the burning rate test. A fully reliable experimental study is presented.

Based on the chemical structure and experience, no flammable properties are anticipated if contact with air or water, or no self-heating based on mp <160°C; therefore, studies were deemed unnecessary.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item did not propagate combustion in the UN N1 preliminary test. Therefore, the main test was not required, and the test item is NOT classified as a Flammable Solid, based on GHS/CLP criteria.
