Short-term toxicity to fish

Description of key information

One key study is available (Shell Toxicology Laboratory (Tunstall), 1982), performed to assess the acute toxicity of Heptanal to rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) under semi-static conditions. Principle of the test followed the OECD guideline 203.


Groups of ten healthy S. gairdneri fingerlings were exposed to an approximately logarithmic series of concentrations between 1 and 100 mg/l (1, 3, 10, 30 and 100 mg/L). No analytical monitoring has been performed during the test. Therefore, although semi-static conditions have been applied, it was not possible to check that the concentration of the substance has been satisfactorily maintained during the test. All concentrations of test substance are expressed in terms of the quantity initially added to the test vessels. Observations were made on the number of dead fish after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours exposure.


No mortality was observed at the 3 mg/L test concentration. 100% mortality was observed at the 100mg/L test concentration. The 96h LC50 value, calculated by graphical interpolation using log/probit graph paper, was estimated to be 12 mg/L.


This study was considered insufficiently reliable in accordance with a Compliance Check. In the same compliance check, a long-term toxicity study in accordance with the OECD TG 210 was also requested. Therefore, a new short-term toxicity study to fish is not deemed necessary.
