Anthracene is metabolized in vivo (Sprague-Dawley rats, m;
subcutaneous tissue) and in vitro (rat liver cytosol
preparations) to 9-methyl and 9,10-dimethylanthracene. 

These compounds are further decomposed to
9-hydroxymethylanthracene and
9-hydroxymethyl-10-methylanthracene as well as
9-formylanthracene and dihydroxymethylanthracene.
