Anthracene is acutely phototoxic towards all three test organisms (fish, daphnia, alga). The EC50 / EC50 values consistently are very low over all species tested with about 1 - 4 µg/L.

In the absence of UV radiation, the evidence of acute toxicity within the range of the water solubility of the substance (~40 - 70 µg/L) is seldomly observed but in solitary cases: A 48h-LC50 of half the saturation (~ 36 µg/L) is reported by Abernethy et al. 1983).

One 48h-EC50 (daphnia) of about 750 µg/L (obviously at above water solubility) is reported, which was obtained without UV radiation (Smith et al. 1988).
