Description of key information

The NOEC for adult emergence of Chironomus tentans has been determined to be 58.5 mg/L of perchlorate ion via the water phase (Dean et al., 2004). The NOEC was converted in order to express this results as mg/kg sediment in dw using a Koc (for perchlorate) of 43.89. It leads to a NOEC of 467 mg/kg sediment dw.

Additional information

Dean et al. (2004) studied the chronic toxicity of Perchlorate to Chironomus tentans according to requirements in the U.S. EPA guidelines and following the same principles than OECD Guideline 219. The study was considered as reliable with restrictions.

The midges utilized were approximately 1-d posthatch at study initiation. They were exposed during 42 days to Perchlorate-spiked water in flow-through conditions.

The adult emergence was the most sensitive biological endpoint measured during the midge life-cycle exposure to Perchlorate with a NOEC at 58.5 mg/L.
