Experimental results were identified for the three trophic levels: algae (Thiebaud 1999), Daphnia (Thiebaud 2000) and fish (Drottar 1999). These studies had variable reliability of Kilmisch scores 1 and 2. The following sections detail the robust summaries for these studies in the appropriate sections.

The results from these studies and the biodegradation data indicate that 2-methylpropane-2-thiol will be classified as chronic category 2, under GHS, with the hazard phrase "toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects". 2 -methylpropane-2 -thiol would be classified as R51/53 under DSD, with the risk phrases "toxic to aquatic organisms" and "may cause long term adverse effects in the aquatic environment".
