- Endpoint:
- surface tension
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 08 - 11 January 2016
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study with acceptable restrictions
- Remarks:
- The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. Substance ID is adequately specified. Validation applies with restrictions considering that the solution prepared with a loading rate of 1g/L and slowly mixed for 72h may not be saturated. However the surface tension measured during the study being < 60mN/m the study shows potential for surface activity at the concentration tested.

- Surface tension:

- Remarks on result:

- Conclusions:
- Surface tension = 51.5 mN/m at 21.5°C
Mean of two surface tension determinations obtained on duplicate 90% aqueous solutions prepared using a loading rate of 1 g/L in distilled water, mixed for 72 hours at 100 RPM, stand for 1 hour and centrifuged to removed the excess of material (2000 rpm for 10 minutes). - Executive summary:
The surface tension of test item was determined according to EU A.5 and OECD 115 guidelines, ring method.
The result is the mean of two determinations obtained on duplicate 90% aqueous solutions prepared using a loading rate of 1 g/L in distilled water, mixed for 72 hours at 100 RPM, stand for 1 hour and centrifuged to removed the excess of material (2000 rpm for 10 minutes).
Note that the water solubility test (see endpoint 4.8) shows that the saturation of a solution prepared with a loading rate of 100mg/L slow-stirred at 20 +/-0.5°C, should be reached only after 165h. Therefore the solution used in this study may not be saturated.
However, considering that all the measured values were lower than the threshold value of 60mN/m and assuming that the surface tension obtained on a 90% saturated solution should be lower than the surface tension obtained on a 90% non-saturated solution, we anticipate that the substance has POTENTIAL for SURFACE ACTIVE PROPERTIES under the experimental conditions and based on EU. A5 criteria.
Nevertheless considering that the structure of the known constituents of the substance are not characteristic of true surfactants and that it is not the intended use of the substance (i.e. not a desired property), this conclusion should be taken with caution.
Reference
Results
The surface tension of the reference substance methanol was measured before the first determination. A surface tension of 22.6 mN/m was registered and complies with the validation criteria of 22.5 +/- 0.2 mN/m.
The surface tension of the reference substance butanol-1 was measured after the second determination. A surface tension of 24.3 mN/m was registered and complies with the validation criteria of 24.3 +/- 0.2 mN/m
First determination
The temperature was 21.6°C at the beginning of the determination and 21.8°C at the end of the determination. The temperature during the determination did not vary by more than 0.5°C.
The time elapsed between the preparation of the solution and its transfer to the beaker is 5 minutes.
The following surface tension values were obtained:

The five last values do not differ by more than 0.1 mN/m from the mean, so they were used for the calculation of the mean.
By calculating the average of the five last values, the mean value obtained is 51.3 mN/m at 22°C ( concentration: 90% aqueous solution prepared using a loading rate of 1 g/L in distilled water, mixed for 72 hours at 100 RPM, stand for 1 hour and centrifuged to removed the excess of material (2000 rpm for 10 minutes))
Second determination
The temperature was 20.7°C at the beginning of the determination and 20.8°C at the end of the determination. The temperature during the determination did not vary by more than 0.5°C.
The time elapsed between the preparation of the solution and its transfer to the beaker is 11 minutes.

The five last values do not differ by more than 0.1 mN/m from the mean, so they were used for the calculation of the mean.
By calculating the average of the five last values, the mean value obtained is 51.6 mN/m at 21°C ( concentration: 90% aqueous solution prepared using a loading rate of 1 g/L in distilled water, mixed for 72 hours at 100 RPM, stand for 1 hour and centrifuged to removed the excess of material (2000 rpm for 10 minutes)).
Conclusion
Results of duplicate determinations do not differ by more than 0.5 mN/m, so the mean value of 51.5 mN/m is retained for final result.

Additional information
A reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized OECD/EU method and under GLP, is available. Despite restrictions due to the potential use of non-saturated solution, the result of the study lead to a value below the threshold of 60mN/m and showed POTENTIAL FOR SURFACE ACTIVE PROPERTIES under the experimental conditions and based on EU. A5 criteria. It is considered as a key study and the result is retained as key value.
Nevertheless considering that the structure of the known constituents of the substance are not characteristic of true surfactants (i.e. does not contain distinct polar and non-polar parts) and that it is not intended to be used as a surfactant (i.e. not a desired property), this conclusion should be taken with caution.
