Description of key information

The test substance ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with propylidynetrimethanol is readily biodegradable at a concentration of 33 mg/L but does not pass the 10 day window.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

A GLP study was conducted to OECD guideline 301B (CO2 evolution). Municiple activated sewage sludge was used at a content of 30mg dry matter/L. The reference substance was 86% degraded after 28days and was not significantly inhibited by the test substance thereby validating the test.

The mean biodegradation of the test substance (ca 33 mg/L) first exceeded 10% after 3 days but did not exceed 60% (pass level for CO2 evolution test) after 13 days and therefore the 10 day window was not passed. However, the 60% pass level was exceeded within the 28 day test and therefore Capa oligomer can be considered as readily biodegradable.
